Why are rabbits not rodents? Let’s find out.
Rabbits, although they may bear some resemblance to rodents, fascinatingly belong to a separate order called Lagomorpha.
These adorable creatures, unlike rodents, possess two pairs of incisors, with the addition of two small peg-like teeth behind their upper incisors.
This dental configuration aids in their unique chewing mechanism, known as “double chewing,” where food is first sliced and partially ground by their front teeth, and then further broken down into finer particles by their back teeth.
Another intriguing fact about rabbits is their ability to “ruminate,” similar to cows and goats, where they can re-chew partially digested food, aiding in better digestion.
Furthermore, rabbits are also distinguished from rodents by their digestive system, featuring a specialized structure called the “cecum.”
This chamber plays a significant role in breaking down tough-to-digest food, such as fibrous plant material, into nutrient-rich substances.
Hence, rabbits stand out as remarkable creatures, not belonging to the rodent family but rather possessing distinct adaptations that make them a fascinating study in their own right.
